7 February 1863 --From the Savannah Republican publishing a Lake City dispatch: During the Civil war Mrs. R. Leonardy and five children were banished to Lake City by the Federals along with many others. "These people were
forced to leave their St. Augustine Homes because they have relatives in Confederate service. . . The Lake City paper describes all these unfortunate people as being very poor, though most of them had homes and slaves of their own.
Their condition appeals to the philanthropic and benevolent, and we hope they will meet with prompt relief." [See also Rosa Noda, Mathias Leonardi, Mercella Baya, Michaelina Neligan.]
