Military History and Pension Application

John D. Leonardi’s Civil War Pension Application.
Enlisted in Company B, 3rd Infantry Regiment Florida on 24 May 1861.

He was wounded severely in the hand at Murfreesboro 2 Jan1863 and was captured 7 August 1864 near Atlanta and sent to Camp Chase Prison.

Awarded for Distinguished Service, in March of 1869 John D Leonardy applied for a pension listing himself as an invalid application # 141570. Pension was filed for serving as a Private in Company A, 5th Regiment U.S. He had joined the US Army on 22 April 1865 at Camp Chase, OH. Many Confederate POW’s followed this practice out of Camp Chase. This could have been for two reasons (or more). 1 the conditions at Camp Chase were notoriously deplorable. 2 the men were destitute and often were given food and quarters to join the US Army and fight the Native Americans. As of this writing we have not yet been able to determine where John went after he joined the US Army.
